The various masked Ghostfaces responsible for Lakewood’s 2015 – 2016 murder sprees deploy various sadistic “games” as part of their machinations.
These games typically involve entrapping a catspaw or patsy as a player, usually through phone calls or texts. The recipient of the call is expected to perform a test of some kind, ranging from answering seemingly arbitrary (usually trick) questions, to more actively aiding and abetting Ghostface’s scheme in some capacity.
Not every Ghostface plays games in the same way or for the same reason. Piper Shaw, for example, was fond of using these games to toy with her victims before killing them, regardless of their performance. Kieran Wilcox, her one-time accomplice, concentrated his efforts on controlling Audrey Jensen, who he hoped to take the fall for his crimes.
Piper’s Games
Stacy Winters
Stacy Winters was Piper’s first target in the 2015 Lakewood Slashings. On the evening of October 18, 2015, Piper killed Stacy’s parents, Robert and Gina, by filling their car with nerve gas, causing them to choke to death. Piper stole their phones, the keys to their house, and the remote device that opened the automatic garage door.
Following this, she texted and then called Stacy, who was home alone, waiting for the arrival of her boyfriend Brock Carmichael. Identifying herself to Stacy as a “friend of a friend”, Piper claimed Stacy had been nominated to participate in a game.
Pick Your Prize
Stacy was asked to name the most important person in her life. Stacy chose her boyfriend Brock, not knowing this would seal his fate. After hanging up, Piper attacked Brock, knocking him off his bike, binding and gagging him before video-calling Stacy from Brock’s phone, ensuring she got a look at the ‘prize’ she’d now have to play for.
Main Question
In order to “win” her prize, Stacy had to answer a question: “who’s always got your back when the chips are down”. Stacy correctly deduced this was a reference to her parents and tried calling her mother, not realizing Gina’s phone is in Piper’s possession. The call went to voicemail and Piper texted a congratulations, using the remote to open the garage door, luring Stacy outside, where she found Brock with the wheel of his bike forced around his neck. Stacy panicked and, trying to help him, errantly caused the metal spokes to slice into Brock’s neck, severing his jugular and killing him before her terrified eyes.
Lightning Round
Piper called Stacy again, from Brock’s phone, chiding her for “spoiling her prize” and asking a final question: if she has the remote that opened the garage, what else is she likely to have? Stacy saw the front door open and realized her tormentor must have gotten to her parents first. Piper added, however, that she didn’t need to get into the house since everything she needed was right here.
Stacy was promptly ambushed by Piper, who stabbed her in the abdomen, dealing a mortal blow.1
