History

Early Life

Brock was born on June 22, 2000, in Lakewood. The Carmichael family lived on LeJeune Parkway, north of the eponymous neglected park. When Brock was about 10, his parents had another child: a younger sister, who was baptized by Pastor Howard Jensen at Lakewood First Lutheran.

Charismatic, athletic and attractive, Brock was popular in school and a consummate object of affection for girls. One of his many admirers was Stacy Winters, a frequent target of bullies at Garfield Middle School, due to her weight, bad skin and braces. Despite these perceived deficiencies, however, Brock saw something in Stacy and, by the time they started at George Washington High School, they were a couple.1

At GW High, Brock joined the football team as a wide receiver.2

Murder

On the evening of October 18, 2015, Brock left home on his bike to meet up with Stacy at her place for a movie night while her parents were out. Before leaving home (about 6:43 PM), he watched a recently uploaded YouTube video depicting two girls (one of which was Audrey Jensen, daughter of Brock’s pastor) making out. Brock liked a crude comment left by Joel, a teammate of his.

He left on his bike a bit before 6:45 PM, chatting to Stacy a bit on the phone as he went. Shortly afterward, Stacy saw the “like” he’d left on Joel’s comment and reproachfully texted him a screencap. Abashed, he called her and Stacy explained she knew what it was like to be “famous for all the wrong reasons”. Realizing his error, Brock apologized and promised to have Joel delete the comment, assuring Stacy he’d do it for her. The gesture touched Stacy, reaffirming her love for him.

Moments after getting off the phone, Brock was attacked by a masked killer, who knocked him off his bike, bound his wrists and ankles with zip ties, and gagged him with tape. This figure used Brock as a “prize” in a sadistic game played over the phone with Stacy who, it turned out, had earlier innocently nominated Brock as the “most important person” in her life when posed the question by the killer, who had identified himself to her as a “friend of a friend”.

Following this brief interaction with Stacy, things worsened for Brock. His assailant forced a daisy chain down his throat, overcoming his gag reflex, before re-gagging him. Brock was then brought forcibly to the Winters house, where the rear wheel of his bike was detached and forced over his head, the metal spokes digging into the flesh of his neck.

Stacy presently emerged from the house and, from a misguided desire to help Brock, tried to remove the wheel from around his neck. Her well-intentioned action forced the spokes deeper into his neck, however, severing his jugular and killing him before her terrified eyes. Stacy did not long outlive him, being ambushed by the killer moments later.3

Aftermath

Brock’s mutilated remains ended up being broadcast on live TV, thanks to the shaky hands of Lakewood KLA cameraman Greg Peters who, while “swallow[ing] a puke” accidentally moved his lens away from reporter Eliza Taylor to the corpse in the Winters’ driveway. The segment was hastily pulled from the air.4

Appearance

Brock was a fairly-complected young man with curly-hair, sun-bronzed skin,5 and blue eyes. He had a lean, athletic build and was purportedly considered handsome by his peers.

Personality

Brock is charismatic, athletic, and principled. Though he displays shades of adolescent immaturity, he is able to acknowledge when he’s screwed up and generally strives to be a better person. He chose Stacy despite her status as a social pariah at George Washington High, and was unaffected by others’ prejudice against her.

Development

Brock was created by Celebrity01, the moderator of the original 2015 Scream forum. Not quite an NPC, he was created solely to be among the first victims of the killer, thereby sparing players from losing one of their characters at the very start of the game, while maintaining the Scream franchise tradition of opening with a kill scene. Contrast with the May 2016 Season 2 AU, which foreshadowed its canon equivalent by not opening with a murder.

As the little-seen boyfriend of the first girl to be called by Ghostface, Brock was deliberately analogous to the canon TV series’ Tyler O’Neil, who was himself a counterpart to the original film’s Steve Orth. Unlike Steve and Tyler, however, he is never seen alive in the original post.

Other Interpretations

Like many details from the 2015 forum, Stacy and Brock were subjected to a fair amount of retconning when they were adapted into the SRU via The Story so Far.

As originally conceived, Stacy and Brock were juniors, and were generally treated as being in the same class as the main characters. There was confusion during the forum’s lifespan as to what grades the core characters were meant to be in. The Final Retreat cemented the core characters as sophomores during the events of Volumes I and II, while The Story so Far delineated which characters were exceptions, including Stacy and Brock.

In keeping with his age, the forum’s Brock drove a car, not a bike. His car was a red 2004 Chevy.

Like Stacy, he was painfully wholesome. The reader is led to believe Stacy is joking about withholding sex from him if he complains about watching Sleepless in Seattle for movie night, only to learn Stacy is merely threatening to eat all the popcorn.

Brock was gutted, similarly to the original Scream’s Casey Becker. His body was hurled through the window at Stacy, potentially in homage to the original Friday the 13th.6

Trivia

Brock had no faceclaim in the Season 1 AU. His Story so Far faceclaim, Walker Scobell, was 6-years-old when Scream: The TV Series premiered.

Brock’s YouTube username was BROCKMIKEY2000.

Stacy describes Brock as a “film buff”, but this is in reference to her only knowing Kevin Bacon as “the guy from X-Men“, so it’s unclear how much of a connoisseur Brock may be if this is the baseline.

Brock’s icon in Stacy’s phone is a picture of him flashing deuces at her from across the GW High cafeteria.

While the “original” killer of the 2015 AU was never determined, The Story so Far retroactively confirmed Stacy and Brock to have been killed by Piper Shaw. Piper’s motives for these killings have never been fully elucidated.
