History

Preface

Brooke Maddox, viewing herself as an up-and-coming teen tastemaker among her peers at George Washington High School, sought to establish herself as a hostess of wild, fun, and impressive teen parties. This was complicated by her nominal friend Nina Patterson, GW High’s Queen Bee and the top of the in-crowd clique Brooke had worked so hard to ingratiate herself with.

Nina had established a tradition of ending the summer with a massive Labor Day party. Brooke, who had wanted her own party at the same time, was forced to reschedule.¹ Looking for a suitable excuse to celebrate, she settled on the Harvest Moon,² at the same time not realizing that the Harvest Moon was on September 27, almost a month before her chosen date of October 18th.

Regardless, Brooke’s guests had as good a sense of the lunar calendar as she did, and Brooke’s Big Beautiful Bash drew a healthy crowd to the Maddox family’s lakefront mansion. Brooke had taken steps to ensure she’d have the house to herself, bribing the city council to meet on a Sunday just to keep her father, Mayor Maddox, from getting in the way.³

Nina, however, had found a way to stick a fork in the works. The previous day, Nina had recorded a video of Audrey Jensen making out with her then-secret girlfriend Rachel Murray at the Wren Lake Overlook. Despite assuring Audrey’s childhood best friend Emma Duval (now a fellow member of the in-crowd) that she wouldn’t do anything with the video, Nina uploaded it to YouTube the following event, and it went locally viral.

The Party

The furious Audrey put two and two together and crashed the party, confronting Emma for her complicity in uploading the video. Brooke broke the girls up, with some unasked for assistance from Audrey’s friends Noah Foster and Amanda Steele, who’d similarly crashed the party to stop Audrey from doing anything stupid.⁴

Brooke brought Emma inside, where she tried to cheer her up.⁵ Meanwhile, Amanda and Noah were cornered by Nina and her boyfriend, Tyler O’Neil. Amanda confronted Nina about uploading the video and wondered why Tyler was defending her, given all Nina had taken from him, insinuating Nina was being unfaithful. Tyler jumped to the conclusion that Nina was cheating on him with Jake Fitzgerald and confronted him. Jake, wasted after chugging a keg through a hose, laughed off the notion, provoking Tyler into tackling him into Brooke’s pool.⁶

It was again left to a furious Brooke to put a stop to the chaos. Disgusted with the boys (but particularly, if arguably unfairly, Jake) for ruining her party, she ordered them to leave and, figuring things were spoilt enough, sent all her guests home with them.⁷

Trivia

Brooke’s Big Beautiful Bash is based on a house party thrown by Brooke in the first “episode” of the 2015 Season 1 AU upon which Volume I of The Story so Far is based. That party didn’t have a stated theme or backstory, and was used primarily as a vehicle to introduce most of the forum’s teen characters.

Brooke’s party was almost a month late for the Harvest Moon, which is almost always in September, only occurring in October once every three years. The October full moon is traditionally called the Hunter’s Moon. Compounding the difficulty, Brooke’s Big Beautiful Bash didn’t take place on a full moon at all. The 2015 Hunter’s Moon occurred on October 26th…a week after Brooke’s Big Beautiful Bash; the day Will Belmont was rescued from GASLIGHT.
