Brett Keener is a character in the Scream Roleplay Universe, figuring in the narrative’s backstory.
A golden haired jock with a brilliant smile and a blunted brain, Brett was part of the preppy ruling class that ran GW High in the early 1990s.
With his friends Kevin Duval, Trent Price, and Mike Vinson, he was a regular tormentor of local outcast Brandon James, his actions playing a pivotal role in inciting the violent rampage that made Brandon famous, and reduced Brett, his friends, and his girlfriend Dara Alden, to names on a dusty memorial plaque.

History
Boys Being Boys
Brett was born on March 6, 1978. The Keeners were a well-to-do family originally from Baton Rouge, who’d moved to the rapidly developing suburb of Lakewood ahead of Brett’s birth. Brett’s brother, Toby, was more than a decade older than him and the two naturally didn’t have much in common.
In high school, Brett joined the football team, forging close bonds with his teammates Kevin Duval, Trent Price, and Mike Vinson. Brett and Kevin were especially close, Brett taking the scrappy, lower class Kev under his wing and introducing him to life as it was lived by the preppier, lakeside set.
Brett had what might politely be termed an “obnoxious personality” that flourished in Kevin’s company. Originally borne of an innate and unquestioned sense of self-confidence, it gained a crueler edge in his adolescence, and found itself casually pointed at the usual targets for such grievances: the brainy, the ugly, the overweight, etc.
Brett mellowed somewhat under the influence of his girlfriend, the raven-haired Dara Alden, but she was no miracle worker. Brett was very protective of his girlfriend, who he’d started up with almost by accident, and was inclined to do whatever she liked out of unexpressed fear she’d drop him if he didn’t.
Halloween
On Halloween night, 1994, Brett was killed by Brandon James, a school pariah who’d been one of his favorite targets. Brett’s friends weren’t spared, and neither was Dara, nor Trent’s girlfriend Laura Cossey. Kevin ended up being the sole survivor of the attack, which became a dark stain on Lakewood’s history.1
Development
Brett and Dara Alden were the only victims of the 1994 murders to be shown in Scream the TV Series, appearing at the start of the third episode, in a flashback to their final moments. Brett was portrayed in this scene by Tyler Tomás Perez.
Brett and his fellow slain classmates were unattested in the SRU until 2025, when they were depicted in Big Trouble in Little Lakewood: 1969, in a vision experienced by Tony Higgs.
Trivia
The victims of the 1994 murders all have faceclaims connected to 1990s horror films. In Brett’s case, his faceclaim, Freddie Prinze Jr, starred in the 1997 Scream copycat I Know What You Did Last Summer, and its 1998 sequel, alongside Laura Cossey’s faceclaim Brandy Norwood.
