Debbie Hayward is a character in the Scream Roleplay Universe, appearing in the first two volumes of The Story so Far, and in Lakewood: Year One.

Mrs. Hayward is GW High’s “Mission Control”, a cutesy nickname that she almost certainly didn’t come up with herself but has deployed with regularity over an impressive career as the school’s animating organ or, in plainer terms, the Main Office Receptionist.

Possessed of a positive attitude and can-do spirit, Mrs. Hayward functions as right hand to both Principal Teague and Vice Principal Kellerman’s right hand, ensuring GW High runs as smoothly as possible which, it must be admitted, is never all that smooth, though everybody with any knowledge agrees things would be much worse without her.

History

Debbie Hayward was born on July 3, 1960, in Lakewood.

Mission Control

For many years, Mrs. Hayward was the receptionist at George Washington High School, a role she approached with a joyful spirit and a warrior’s tenacity. In no time at all, she’d become a local institution at the school, serving as “mission control” from the central office.

In the grand tradition of admin support services, Mrs. Hayward’s responsibilities comprised the broad umbrella of “other duties as required”, including attendance, scheduling, supplies-wrangling, inter-departmental politicking and, shoulder-to-shoulder with Vice Principal Kellerman, Title funding applications. All these duties, she approached with a broad smile and a can-do attitude.

Operations

Mrs. Hayward was still occupying her role at the onset of the Lakewood Slashings in October 2015. The murders of freshmen Stacy Winters and Brock Carmichael had resulted in the deployment of sheriff’s deputies on school property, earning the concern of Principal Teague. Mrs. Hayward greeted Sheriff Hudson when he arrived at the office to speak to Teague about these developments.1

Appearance

Mrs. Hayward is a stoutly-built middle-aged woman. She has green eyes (and requires glasses) and wears her auburn hair in tight curls.

Wardrobe

Mrs. Hayward wore a violet cardigan the day Sheriff Hudson visited the office to speak to Teague about police presence at the school.2

Personality

Mrs. Hayward is bubbly and good tempered. Occupying a public facing role, she is irrepressibly friendly and eager to please. Her manner is matronly and perhaps excessively cutesy.

Trivia

Mrs. Hayward shares her faceclaim, Beverley Elliott, with Depression-era gangster Bess Coonan in Big Trouble in Little Lakewood: 1933.
